Environmental Concerns

By Andrew N. "Andy" Weissman

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Culver City

This information is provided by the candidate
We live in a desert, we are constantly told we are in a drought. Global warming is a fact. Our resources are finite.

As a Councilmember:

I would promote the creation of environmental initiatives for Culver City that will put our community at the forefront of the battle to save the environment. These don't have to be expensive. They do have to be effective.

I would work to establish landscaping guidelines and tree programs for new construction and create standards for replanting and irrigation. We can expand energy efficiency programs for installation and retrofit, such as lighting, furnaces, low flow toilets, windows, irrigation and water conservation.

I would encourage an expansion of natural drainage systems and promote construction and other landscape features that serve to replenish underground water supplies, retain runoff, reduce water demand and improve water quality.

We need to take even the simplest steps to protect the environment. Paved parking lots allow water runoff into local waterways, like Ballona Creek and contribute to pollution and flooding. Something as simple as increasing storm water infiltration through the soil can reduce our reliance on purchased water.

For new construction, I would work to establish standards for reducing surface runoff, creating swales and watershed, and increasing utilization of sustainable materials.

The time is long overdue for Culver City to step up and implement sustainable initiatives.

With your support, I will be able to work to bring these initiatives to fruition.
