Smart Voter Official Statement for Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner

Candidate for
Member of the City Council; City of Malibu

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

“ZUMA JAY” WAGNER

Age: 55
Occupation: Business Owner

Public safety and welfare for all Malibu residents is of utmost importance. I believe in protecting Malibu’s environment and in promoting Malibu’s small business community. We must improve educational and recreational opportunities for all of the city’s residents.

The recent wildfires demonstrate that we need to improve and expand the City’s ability to respond to area-wide disasters. We must have disaster-proof communication links between the City emergency services and the residents. Critical City data must be backed-up offsite to keep it accessible in times of these emergencies.

I have lived and worked in Malibu for most of my life. My background includes owning and operating the Zuma Jay Surf shop since 1975. In the 80’s I served as a reserve deputy sheriff.

I am currently a Malibu C.E.R.T. member. As a surfer, I have led efforts to clean up coastal waters from uncontrolled pollution and litter. As a motion picture pyrotechnic / special-effects operator, I have obtained the highest possible certifications from the A.T.F. and from the State of California. The State Fire Marshall continues to endorse my pamphlet, Movie Industry Firearms Safety, copyrighted in 1994.

Malibu is a little city with a brilliant international reputation. As a business owner and Malibu Pier concessionaire, I recognize that we need a Council that helps our vibrant visitor serving businesses while also preserving distinct local stores.

I am concerned that Malibu maintain its independence from intrusions into our local control by various outside agencies.

So, as your City Council member, I pledge to:

  • Try to improve public health and safety.
  • Attempt to strengthen disaster response, readiness and coordination.
  • Promote dialogue between City Hall, residents and commercial interests.
  • Do my best to ensure accountability for City Council decisions and appointments.
  • Continue to protect our shoreline and mountain environments.

I respectfully ask your for support and for your vote in the April, 2008 Malibu City Council election.

Thank you,
Jefferson Wagner
