Biography

CULVER CITY SERVICE

Dr. Luther Henderson is a sixteen year resident of Culver City. He was appointed to the Cultural Affairs Commission by the Culver City Council in 2001, and is, once again, chair of the Commission. During his tenure:

  • The Commission achieved vast community participation in creating the City's first ever Community Cultural Plan, subsequently approved by the City Council in 2003.

  • The commission worked diligently to improve the cultural life and opportunities for Culver City citizens.

He is a member of the:

  • Culver City Chamber of Commerce + Governmental Affairs Committee

  • Culver City Exchange Club

  • Culver City Homeowners Association

  • Culver City Cultural Affairs Foundation

  • Culver City Historical Society

He is also a graduate of the Culver City Police Department's Citizens Police Academy.

EDUCATIONAL CAREER SERVICE

Luther is a Professor of Music and Humanities at Los Angeles City College. In his 31 year career in education he has:

  • Served for thirteen years as an elected faculty leader and treasurer, monitoring the $1.3 billion Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) budget.

  • Assisted in writing and formulating the budget process for the LACCD. As a result of this experience he has acquired expertise with governmental budgets.

  • Taught at Pasadena City College, Beverly Hills High School and at Mount Vernon Junior High School in Los Angeles.

BUSINESS CAREER

Luther is a practicing real estate broker in Culver City. During his more than 17 years as a Realtor, he has:

  • Represented clients in both commercial and residential real estate transactions.

  • Represented a diverse number of clients including college chancellors, faculty, labor organizations, magazine publishers, religious organizations, a former American League baseball batting champion and hall of fame member, elected civic leaders among many others.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

As a professional musician, Luther has performed as:

  • Orchestra conductor for the Los Angeles production of Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies starring Gregory Hines at the Shubert Theatre;

  • Guest conductor - the Detroit Symphony accompanying flutist Hubert Laws at the Hollywood Bowl; Dance Theatre of Harlem; Nancy Wilson; and Grover Washington, Jr.

  • Guest conducted Grammy Awards Show and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

  • Music arranger on the Grammy Awards and Emmy Awards television shows.

  • Pianist in three Monster Concerts at Carnegie Hall, Royce Hall and The White House.

The City Council of the City of Los Angeles passed a resolution in recognition of his numerous achievements and outstanding work in the field of music.

PERSONAL

Dr. Luther Henderson was born in New York City and moved to Los Angeles when he was seven years old. Upon graduation from Susan Miller Dorsey High School he studied at The University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music earning both his Bachelor and Master's degrees in music education. He received his doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin.

He is married to Patricia G. Siever, the Director of the Accelerated College Transfer Program, and Professor of History at West Los Angeles College. Professor Siever is the former Vice President+Board of Governors- California Community Colleges. She was appointed to the Board of Governors by Governor Pete Wilson and reappointed by Governor Gray Davis.

Patricia and Luther have four adult children and a lively grandson.
