Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Elisabeth Knapp

Candidate for
Council Member; Borough of Swarthmore

This information is provided by the candidate

I am an architect and business owner who has lived in Swarthmore with my husband and two children since 1992. Over the years I have volunteered my professional skills to the Swarthmore community in various ways; working with the Swarthmore Town Center Design Group, designing the recently completed Swarthmore Town CLock Plaza, and serving as a current member of the Swarthmore Zoning Hearing Board. My involvement has been due to the firm belief that Swarthmore is an increasingly unique and special place to live, and one that requires careful work to preserve its character while exploring ways to maximize the economic vitality of the town.

I believe that with my background as an architect, I will add an important voice to Borough Council as Swarthmore discusses town planning issues such as the multi-use "College Inn", protection of the historic architectural character of areas of the town, and continued promotion of the downtown business community. The town's recently completed street and sidewalk improvement project has done wonders to beautify downtown Swarthmore, but the effort to strengthen the economic health of the retail area should not stop there. By taking steps to strengthen Swarthmore's business and retail environment, we will be better able to maintain an appropriate level of municipal services within a tax rate that allows our retired citizens to remain in our town and attracts new families to our neighborhoods.
