Helping Residents Respond to Ash Tree Insect Threats

By Jim O'Reilly

Candidate for Member Council; City of Wyoming

This information is provided by the candidate
Our Tree City faces losses of hundreds of valuable trees, and I will use expertise to cooperate against EAB threats.
Scientists and natural resource experts predict we will lose thousands of ash trees in our county to an infestation of "emerald ash borer" insects. Wyoming is a tree city that may lose several hundred street trees. Beating the borer through chemical pesticide treatments is a costly possibility but will require careful attention to details. Because of my work as a longtime expert on pesticide regulation, I obtained from federal scientists information about the available treatments and shared it with our task force. As a veteran lecturer on consumer protection, and having handled consumer protection cases for Legal Aid, I want to avoid having criminals mislead our residents, especially elder homeowners, to expensive tree removal that might not be necessary in a particular situation. As a tree owner I will keep others informed and cooperate fully with community education goals.
