Nobody Works Harder

By Valerie M. O'Keeffe

Candidate for Supervisor; Town of Mamaroneck

Maintaining Open and Accountable Government
I've tried to work hard for the people of the Town of Mamaroneck. We have faced several important events which required strong focused responses. First, the IKEA "problem," rising higher and higher school and county tax levies, the demand for more field space and most recently, the terrible floods our Town experienced on April 15th, 2007. I was appointed to the Westchester County Flood Action Task Force by County Executive Andy Spano. During my tenure despite all the demands for increased services, I worked hard to keep our tax increases as reasonable as possible. In fact, the town-wide tax rate has decreased.

One of the things I am most proud of is the fact that working with our Town staff, we gained a triple A tax rating from Moody's and have been able to retain the triple A rating in our latest borrowing. The business of government is not all related to finances, but day to day interaction with our citizens. We have tried to treat everyone equally and respectfully. I hope I have been successful.

As Town Supervisor, President of the Westchester Municipal Officials Association and President of the Tri-County Association of Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties, I have been able to facilitate strong inter-municipal cooperation.

Environmental protection has been among my most important priorities. Safeguarding wetlands and preserving the overall environment will be especially important in any effective strategy for mitigating climate change and its impacts.

There are a few projects waiting to be completed in the Town which I would like to have a hand in overseeing, especially the construction of the new apartment house and parking deck on Myrtle Boulevard, as well as the creation of resident only parking in the Washington Square area. I put a strong emphasis on inter-municipal cooperation and our cultural resources, including our libraries.
