Below please find my accomplishments in the policy and issues areas that affect San Mateo Residents and Businesses
Enhancing Public Safety
  • San Mateo's new police station is under construction. John Lee supported this state-of-the-art facility that will provide the Police Department with an enhanced ability to fight crime, communicate, and respond to emergencies.
  • Committed to the ongoing renovations of all of San Mateo's fire stations to improve response times and paramedic services.
  • Voted to purchase four new vehicles for the Fire Department and two new mobile surveillance vehicles for the Police Department.

Economic Development
  • John Lee supports continued downtown revitalization with new shops and restaurants to compliment the success of the Century Theatre complex.
  • Over 800 new business licenses were issued this year in San Mateo, including the opening of offices for Salesforce.com and Keynote Software. This represents increased tax revenue and new jobs for San Mateo.
  • Participated in the public outreach process for the Downtown Specific Plan to develop a framework for the next phase of downtown development.

New San Mateo Main Library
  • John Lee supported this state-of-the-art new library facility that was opened in August 2006.
  • The library contains 100 public internet computers, wireless internet access, community meeting rooms, areas for children and teens, and a café.
  • In addition to providing important library services and community space for children, seniors, and residents, the new main library is a model of energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainability.

Sustainability Advisory Committee
  • John Lee voted to create this City Council sponsored committee charged with developing a sustainability plan for the City of San Mateo.
  • The committee will analyze the City's current policies regarding green building, promoting energy efficiency, expanding mass transit, and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Committed to reducing the City's "carbon footprint" and improving collective and individual sustainability programs.

New and Affordable Housing
  • John Lee supported new housing units that have been built in the past few years, with many units available as affordable homes for seniors and young families.
  • Supported the renewal of the City's affordable housing policy which requires a minimum 10% of all new housing units be made available for low income seniors and residents.
  • Approved new housing units near Caltrain and mass transit to reduce traffic congestion.

Parks & Recreation
  • John Lee approved the Parks & Recreation Strategic Plan to guide park renovation, open space protection, and the creation of new parks.
  • Pushed for enhanced recreation programs to keep seniors active and healthy and keep kids engaged and out of trouble.
  • Expanded the City's park ranger program to improve visitor services and supported improvements to neighborhood parks including Shoreline Park, Laurelwood Park, and Sugarloaf Mountain.

Common Sense Solutions at City Hall
  • Fought against the County's plan to rebuild the Peninsula Avenue overpass by taking people's homes and property through eminent domain.
  • Committed to the continued pursuit of local, state, and federal funds to improve the levee system in eastern San Mateo to protect property, reduce insurance rates, and prevent future flooding.
  • Strongly opposed to "Casino" style gaming at Bay Meadows.

Traffic Relief
  • As a member of the County Transportation Authority, John Lee works to find solutions that reduce traffic congestion and get people home to their families.
  • Supported the addition of auxiliary lanes on Hwy 101 between Millbrae and Menlo Park to ease commute traffic.
  • Supported upgrades to Caltrain service and San Mateo train stations.
  • Funded local street repaving and pothole repair, shuttles, and paratransit service for disabled residents.
