Academic Achievement in Our Schools

By Mark D. Hudak

Candidate for School Board Member; San Mateo-Foster City School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Our District has steadily increased test scores and introduced innovative programs so that all students can succeed.
The San Mateo-Foster City School District has focused on standards-based education in the classroom and this effort is paying off. Our District now has an API score of 810, above the State's goal of 800. Given the number of students who are English learners and/or live in poverty, this is a remarkable achievement. Our teachers, principals, and administrators deserve full credit for this growth.

We have brought more resources to the schools that face the most challenges. In particular, College Park (formerly Turnbull Academy) had a population that was over 90% English learners. Over the past three years, College Park has raised its test scores nearly 200 points. That is phenomenal. But more work needs to be done, and the District must build on this foundation.

At the same time, the District has initiated many innovative academic programs that provide choices for all students. These include a new Mandarin program, our renowned Spanish/English Immersion school at Fiesta Gardens, a Montessori middle school to supplement the existing Montessori elementary schools, a math/science magnet school, International Baccalaureate studies, increased computer and technolgy training, and year-round calendars for some schools. These programs will prepare our students for success in high school and beyond.

The District has accomplished many of its academic goals and has stong programs in place for the future. Residents of San Mateo and Foster City should be proud of their schools.
