Adequate Police Protection

By John Hoffmann

Candidate for City Council member; City of San Carlos

This information is provided by the candidate
As part of the cutbacks six police positions have been eliminated; officers who patrol and insure our safety. This department is the one area in which we should have no more cuts and as money is available, our initial objective should be to restore the lost positions. Lack of sufficient officers means thin patrolling coverage; it also means overtime is common and that officers are called back to work after completing a full shift. Both of these are major factors contributing to officer burnout and loss of efficiency.

The department has a mutual aid agreement with Belmont and both cities work in close cooperation. It is not uncommon to have a Belmont officer as backup or patrolling in San Carlos, particularly during the graveyard shift, as there are only two San Carlos officers on patrol. Likewise one of our two officers may assist Belmont, leaving only a single patrolman for our entire city.

Having an adequate police force simply means we need more manpower and that is why I believe restoration of lost positions is so important. This should be our first priority as funds are available.
