WORK SUMMARY

Education Materials Development, Planning & Training

After graduating with my first degree in Public Administration in 1975, I worked for the State of California, Department of Benefit Payments for 4 years in Personnel Management and in Management Analysis. I left Sacramento to join the Peace Corps in Liberia, beginning a 22-year career in developing countries (1978 to 2000). During this time I progressively worked in and studied health education while acting in managerial and administrative capacities. Some of my various positions included:

  • Health Administrator, Preventive Medical Services (Peace Corps, Liberia)
  • Health Materials Production Officer (United Nations Volunteers, Liberia)
  • Materials Production Officer: Health, Education, Water & Sanitation (United Nations Children's Fund, Uganda) Program Consultant: Health Education and Information, Education & Communication (UNICEF Namibia)
  • Program Consultant: School-Based Health Intervention (UNICEF, New York)
  • Various Consultancies in Program Development and Educational Materials (on prevention and management of HIV/AIDS, school health, ecological sanitation, water, hygiene & environmental sanitation, maternal and child care, adolescent health and development, community advocacy, community based planning & management, nutrition, adults and children with disabilities, micro-credit loans) in various countries (Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya).

I have worked in the areas of technical assistance, program development and management for health education, school-based youth, curriculum and materials development. I have experience in coordination with government partners, technical institutions and Non-governmental organizations to support acceleration of education and communication via country-based development programs. I have undertaken large meeting planning and facilitation using visualisation methodologies, participatory report writing and final report editing and production. I am also a graphic designer and do layout and illustrations for health, education and training materials, with a specialization in low-literacy and technical-to-layperson "translations."

Since returning to live in Pacific Grove, I have been working as an educational materials development consultant for various agencies and organizations (including UNICEF, World Health Organization, The World Bank, Freedom From Hunger, Hesperian Foundation, Family Care International, United Nations Development Group, Child Survival and Collaborations Group (USAID), International Institute for Environment and Development, and others)
