RE-ELECTION STATEMENT

By Gary Taylor

Candidate for Board Member; Mendocino-Lake Community College District; Trustee Area 7

This information is provided by the candidate
I have 16 years experience advocating for students and supporting Mendocino College, ans would like to continue to do so.
I have lived and worked in Kelseyville, Lake County for 26 years. I am a high school teacher, currently the Director of Independent Study for Kelseyville Unified School District. I was the head Wrestling Coach for 24 years. I am a Viet Nam Veteran, and was awarded the Bronze Star.

I am a community service-minded person:

I am a long-time member of the Kelseyville Lions Club, past president and current secretary
I am a member of the American Legion, past financial officer
I am a member of the Lake County Fair Board of Directors
I am a member of the Lake County Sheriff's Activity League Board of Directors

A good board member:

Is a team player who works together in a spirit of cooperation with other board members
Cannot and does not try to act alone outside of the board setting

Within that framework, the board as a whole:

Participates in the most important job a board has, hiring and evaluating the Superintendent/President to run the college Participates in setting policy
Ensures fiscal responsibility
Does not micromanage

I have sixteen years experience doing just that.

I have

Participated in the hiring of the last two Superintendent/Presidents, advocating both times for a woman.
Encouraged the administration to develop a strategic plan which helps determine academic offerings
Encouraged the administration to develop a collaborative budget planning process
Encouraged and supported a Nursing Program
Advocated for a permanent Lake Center
Bought the first 2 stadium seats
Advocated for student athletes
Served on the inaugural Athletes Hall of Fame Selection Committee
And most importantly, I think, was advocating for the passage of Measure W, the bond issue.

The college is financially in good shape and continually working on expanding and improving programs for students

When I interviewed for my current position in Kelseyville 26 years ago, the first question I was asked was, "What is your Philosophy of Education?" My answer was very simple: THE BOTTOM LINE IS THE STUDENTS.

To that end, I have always had the best interests of Mendocino College at hand, and will continue to do so should you re-elect me.

I ask for your vote.

Thank you.
