Innovative Solutions and Opportunities for All Students

By Tammy "Tagami" Reeves

Candidate for Governing Board Member; El Segundo Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I will seek out innovative opportunities to enrich and expand the educational experience for all students. Exploring partnership programs with local colleges and universities may offer students a head start on college and even Associate of Arts degrees.
Providing opportunities for our students should not be based on the size of our district but on our desire to seek out those opportunities. "We don't have to be big, we just have to be smart."

Exploring partnership programs with local colleges and universities can expand the array and caliber of courses we can offer students and provide a path for some students to earn AA degrees while in high school.

Students can benefit from tapping the resources of Fortune 1000 and 500 companies in our backyard. I support a greater partnership with many of the companies so students can experience the business world as part of their high school experience. Many of our nearby businesses are cutting edge technology companies and with additional internship opportunities we could be opening the doors for our students to future careers. We can explore the possibility of guest teachers from the business world in classes such as physics, aeronautics, technology, and engineering, for example.

We are well on our way to the technological advances of this millennium, but we need to continually strategically plan for the future so that our District is positioned at the forefront of programs for the students. We need to provide tools to our teachers to teach students who are technologically savvy and deal with automation from every angle. An example of this is `way back when' students were taught how to research and find information for their term papers. Today, information is so readily available and in vast amounts that it can overwhelm students; we no longer need to teach how to get information but how to manage, process, evaluate, and prioritize that information.
