Stance on Vouchers

By Esthela Torres de Siegrist

Candidate for Governing Board Member; El Monte Union High School District

Opposed to any kind of voucher that represents an attack on our traditional public school system.
The controversy over vouchers continues across this nation. Advocates for vouchers claim that they will improve education by encouraging and promoting competition between public schools and the private sector.

However, major flaws emerge. Schools that accept vouchers in most cases will be admitting students "who have few or no problems academically nor with behavior." Thus, the public schools would be devoid of many average and high achievers.

If vouchers were used between public schools, let's say that a student could move with a "voucher" from public school A to public school B--there might be some merit in that.
