The biggest challenge

By David Datz

Candidate for Board of Trustees; Altadena Library District

This information is provided by the candidate
To modernize the Library's physical plant and make it ADA-compliant
The Library is a beautiful facility built 40 years ago. Physically, the Library requires modernization--from the stacks to the rest rooms. Moreover, the modernization must make the Library compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, so that all members of the public can readily access it.

That will be a large effort, requiring a lot of money and, probably, periodic service interruptions. The specific challenges to the Library's Board and professional staff will be to:

  • Plan the process carefully.
  • Raise the money needed for this capital effort--without reducing the operating budget.
  • Choose contractors wisely.
  • Control the process and the expenditures.
  • Minimize service interruptions.

Meeting those challenges will require both Altadena Library and general business project experience. The current Library Board and professional staff have already begun the process. Seeing it through to the end will require knowledge of the Library and of business project practices. I have both.
