Most people don't realize just how innovative and forward looking the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District is. The Harbor Commissioners are dedicated to taking care of what we have and planning for the future. A case in point is the creation of the Humboldt Bay Management Plan.

This document is the North Coast region's first ecosystem-based management plan, and is the blueprint that captures our community vision for the Bay. The creation of a deep-water, modern maritime port, to foster a thriving aquaculture industry, increased public access and recreational facilities, all with a watchful eye toward protecting the quality of air and water.

The first step was the deepening of the harbor entrance and shipping channels. The next step is a modern public terminal able to accommodate all types of vessels. The goal - to promote development of the port to bring in national and international commerce, and the good jobs that come with it.

With the management plan completed, the District can now pursue loans, grants and assistance to promote commerce and enhance our recreational facilities. That, combined with the income that flows from a healthy economy, can be invested in both recreation and conservation, including bay trails and water trails.

I've kept the promises I made four years ago. I'm proud to say we have put the building blocks in place for a healthy, thriving maritime port with plenty of recreational access.

The future is very bright indeed, and I look forward to seeing the job through.

That's what I'm working for!
