Compton City Council District 1

Name: Barbara Jean Calhoun

Age: 57

Occupation: Traffic Officer City of Los Angeles, 1st District Compton City Councilmember

Political Statement:

Throughout my first term as Councilmember representing the 1st District, I have diligently worked giving total representation towards enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Compton and making every effort towards being a catalyst to improving the image of the City of Compton.

Compton, the "Hub City" is on the move! The city's infrastructure is bursting at the seems with hundreds of new homes being built, including the highly anticipated Willow Walk Town Homes, which will be located in the heart of Compton. Streets and sidewalks are being repaired with many more scheduled to undergo repair and replacement. New businesses are flocking to Compton and existing businesses are feeling the New Birth of our great city.

The long awaited removal of blithe at the old auto plaza will soon be the grounds for the "Gateway Towne Center" . Major retail stores such as Target, The Home Depot, Best Buy, Marshall's, The Shoe Pavilion, 24 Hour Fitness Center and a variety of places to eat and socialize, will be afforded to the citizens of Compton and the surrounding areas.

These are but a few of the issues I have been a part of that will bring about a new Compton and bolster our tax base which will allow the city to continue to bring about more improvement and enhance the safety to the City of Compton.

During my term the City of Compton has been granted an "Enterprise Zone Designation", which will serve as a shot in the arm as well to the cityˇ¦s economy.

The California Enterprise Zone Program is design to target economically distressed areas using special state and local incentives to promote business investment and job creation. By encouraging entrepreneurship and employer growth, the program strives to create and sustain economic expansion in California communities.

Some of my community events includes sponsoring the Winter Wonderland Toy Giveaway, the Homeless Veterans Stand Down, the Compton Community Pride Day Celebration and a city wide Health Fair are all designed to promote quality of life, unity and community pride making the City of Compton a better place to live, work and raise a family.

I bring to you a record of honesty, integrity and a firm commitment for public service including:

  • Resident of the City of Compton for nearly 40 years
  • Compton Councilmember Representing the 1st District
  • Treasurer of the Independent Cities Association Board
  • Representative of Compton to the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts
  • Past Trustee- Compton Unified School District Board of Education, elected 2001
  • Past President of SEIU Local 347

Loyalty, Independent Judgment, Honesty, commitment, Communication and Hard Work are keys to my success. My commitment to making the City of Compton a better place to live, work and raise a family needs to be continued until the goals set are completed.

I am confident, in that my constituents share my sentiments when I say, "We have come too far to turn back now!!!!"
