Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Mike Rives

America and this community are both in a crisis. We are not educating the number of people that we should to continue to have growth and prosperity. Our community college system, the LACCD, does as well as we can with the resources that we have. It is not a secret that we are short-changed by Sacramento. Our prior years of declining enrollment have hurt us. And it doesn't help that we have 60,000 potential LACCD students attending other community colleges. Why? Distance? Lack of Courses? Unattractive campuses?

If I am elected, I am going to, first of all, turn one of our campuses into a healthcare training campus where we train nurses, techs, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals to meet the demand for the l million nurses we will need in the USA by 2012. No matter how well we currently train nurses now, we should consolidate our efforts and turn the maximum number possible each year. There should not be a waiting list in the LACCD for any qualifed male or female who wants to be a healthcare worker.

If we are sucessfully in the healthcare field, we can turn another campus into a law enforcement training campus. Instead of multiple police academys, we can have one academy staffed by personnel from the various departments to train police officers. It is not as far-fetched as it seems because the LAPD and LA County Sheriff's Dept are building a crime lab together on the campus of CSULA. Why not train together to meet the challenges of global terrorism. Maybe we can qualify for federal funds for this endeavor?

If am elected, I intend to be a people's representative on the Board. Parents, staff, and students with concerns will always find my door open for help. Special interests will take the back seat to the people's interests. Always.

Finally, I am going to insure that the expenditure of AA bonds and District monies is wise and productive. I will scruntize each expenditure and insure that every amount is well spent.

Our community colleges are the training grounds for the future. I want to be part of the future as your Member of the Board of Trustees.

Please consider my candidacy on March 6, 2007.
