Provide High Quality Instruction Supported by a Strong Professional Development Plan

By Dale Petrulis

Candidate for Board Member; Redondo Beach Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
We must take all steps to ensure that our students are offered a superior educational program that maximizes each student's potential and their ability to make good post high school choices. We must ensure that our students are college prepared and career ready.
Problem: Although our students are doing well, the adoption of standards-based instructional materials would better prepare our students to achieve their potential.

Redondo Beach District has not always adopted instructional materials when the state adopts them, reducing the professional development opportunities available to the teachers in the district, and potentially increasing the district's cost.

Solution:

  • adopt standards-based textbooks and materials in all content areas and at all school levels in the year they become available
  • continue to align our daily instruction to adopted state standards, using teacher expertise and experience to make the instruction meaningful to students
  • ensure that all necessary materials are provided for teachers and staff to perform their responsibilities
  • hold high expectations for ALL students while ensuring that we give them the skills to meet those expectations
  • invest in our teachers, staff and board members by ensuring that they are provided ongoing standards-based professional development to continue a rigorous instructional program
  • invite, involve, and support our parents, as partners, in the education of our Redondo Beach students, providing varieties of times when parents are invited to participate
  • provide ongoing professional development for all administrators. There has been a huge turnover of administrators in the district in recent years, replacing most site and district administrators
  • develop instructional leaders representing stakeholders from all groups, including teachers, classified staff, parents and community members
  • continue to provide emotional, social and character growth within the materials and teaching opportunities provided
