A SENIOR WHO REMEMBERS AND WANTS TO BRING BACK "THE IDEA OF COMMUNITY"

Mr. Juan "Johnny Jay" Jimenez was born in 1942 and raised in Boyle Heights throughout his life. As a youth, Mr. Jimenez experienced a diverse community in Boyle Heights where everyone knew each other and neighbors owned their homes, owned businesses, and looked out for one another. Essentially, residents had the finally word on their community. As time passed, Mr. Jimenez also witnessed and experienced some of the ill changes in the community including gangs, loss of his small business and unemployment, lacking city services and responsiveness, and the coming and going of many unknown neighbors. In retrospect, the need for community values and investment in one another among neighbors is apparent to Mr. Jimenez to which he wants to bring back to CD 14 with his plan for empowering residents to take ownership of their community.
