Questions & Answers

1. As chief legal officer of the state of Ohio, how will you ensure the integrity of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches in light of recent ethical violations and financial irregularities? (150 word limit)

Many Ohioans believe that too many politicians have put private interests before the public interest. In a few cases - involving both Democrats and Republicans - this has been true. Although most officials are honest and dedicated public servants, the crimes committed by a corrupt minority have eroded Ohioans' trust in government. Those who have violated the law should be prosecuted and punished.

Current Ohio law prevents lobbyists from gaining favors from state officials through illegal gifts, but we must clarify these laws, close existing loopholes, ensure transparency and timeliness in the reporting of donations or gifts, and increase penalties for public officials convicted of crimes of public corruption.
