Questions & Answers

1. Both parties have called for redistricting reform. What three top criteria should be used in redrawing legislative districts? (150 word limit)

1.) Probably the most important element of redistricting reform is to assure that there is a competitive balance of registered voter's political party alliance. No district should be drawn in such a way as to effectively silence the voice of either political party or independent voters. Ideally, every voter's voice should be heard and all votes should have equal influence.
2.) Districts should as much as possible relate to demographic representation as well, allowing for a fair cross section or sampling of voters. We must avoid socioeconomic division to provide fair representation of voter concerns across the board.
3.) Compactness of districts should also be considered allowing for geographic differences and practical limitations of size and configuration. This relates in some degree to demographic representation, allowing both urban and rural voices to be heard in a fair and proportional way.
