Judge John G. Marks was elected to the Nassau County Family Court in November 2002, after having completed a six (6) year elected term in Nassau County District Court. In January, 2002, he was appointed the Presiding Judge of the Nassau County Treatment Court, an innovative Court dealing with non-violent offenders whose crime is associated with substance abuse.

He brought to the bench a diverse background. Judge Marks worked for IBM prior to entering the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1961 to 1965. Upon being honorably discharged he returned to IBM. On March 1, 1967 he joined the New York City Police Department. He was retired from NYPD in February, 1975, due to a line of duty injury. He earned an A.S. in Police Science and a B. S. in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice; a Masters In Professional Studies in Criminal Justice from C.W. Post prior to earning a Doctor of Laws Degree from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1979. He is admitted to practice in the courts of New York State and in the federal courts in Eastern and Southern District of New York as well as other federal courts. Prior to being elected to the Bench, Judge Marks practiced extensively in criminal matters and maintained a Family Court practice. He was on the assigned counsel panel in County, District and Family Courts, as well as being on the Family Court Law Guardian Panel. He was "Of Counsel" to the firms that represented the New York City Patrolmen's Benevolent Association.

Judge Marks is the Secretary of the New York State Family Court Judges Association. He is a past President of both the Nassau County and the New York State District Court Judges Associations. Judge Marks is very active in many legal, community, fraternal and religious organizations. He is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, where he is on the WE CARE Advisory Board, the Community Relations and Public Education and the Family Court Law and Procedure Committees. He is a mentor at the A. B. G. Schultz Middle School in Hempstead. He was Chair of the Publications Committee and co-Editor-In-Chief of the Nassau Lawyer, the Journal of the Nassau County Bar Association. He is a member of the Irish Americans in Government, Italian Americans in Government, the Nassau County Women's Bar Association and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He is on the Boards of Directors of the Nassau County Bar Association, the American Academy for Professional Law Enforcement (AAPLE) and the Nassau Lawyers' Association, Inc. He was a member of the St. Martin of Tours Parish Council and is a member of the Catholic Lawyers Guild, a past Deputy Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus and a 4th Degree Sir Knight.

Judge Marks lives with his wife of 33 years, Patricia. They have two daughters, Elizabeth York and Jillian.

Judge Marks is recognized for his integrity, knowledge of the law and experience. In short, Judge G. Marks can be described as educated, energetic and empathetic.
