Questions & Answers

1. Public education is financed through property taxes and state funds. What other means of raising revenue would you support?*

I would support any measure, which balances the needs of providing our children with a world-class education while not undermining our economic viability. We should remove wasteful spending and systematic fraud and dedicate these savings to our education system. I am proud to have cosponsored legislation this year creating a new, independent Office of Medicaid Inspector General. By combating rampant fraud in the system, it is projected to save New Yorkers close to $2 billion. I would support earmarking these funds for public education.

2. Legislative districts have been determined on a partisan basis. Would you support establishing an independent commission as a more open and ethical way to create the districts? Please explain.*

Numerous courts have repeatedly upheld the drawing of Senate and Assembly districts. They comply with Federal Law mandating that Legislative Districts provide fair and equitable representation for the demographic groups who reside in their specific communities. I would be willing to discuss the creation of an independent commission provided it will achieve real results and not merely create another government bureaucracy.
