Enact Real Reform in Albany

By Jeff Brown

Candidate for State Senator; District 49

This information is provided by the candidate
In 2005, New York's state government underwent several important and long-overdue reforms in the way it does business. But, as the Brennan Center for Justice recently reported, there is much more work ahead to promote a more accountable state government. I am committed to taking partisanship out of the process by promoting the development of partnerships in Albany, much like my newly formed New York State Legislative Reform Caucus, that allow us to move beyond party and philosophical differences.

In addition, I support the following reforms:

  • Term limits for all legislative leaders, including Joe Bruno and Sheldon Silver;
  • Constitutional amendment to require on-time budgets...every time!
  • Initiative and referendum to allow New Yorkers to make change directly in the voting booth;
  • An independent redistricting commission;
  • Member item reform;
  • Bipartisan public conference committees;
  • Limit access of special interest groups in Albany;
  • Lower political contribution limits and enhance enforcement.

But unless and until we take on the high tax-and-spend status quo in this state, we will never have REAL reform.
