Increasing enrollment

By John C Sanna

Candidate for School Board Member; South San Francisco Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Finding ways to increase enrollment helps to increase funding that cannot disappear or be taken away.
The South San Francisco Unified School District receives most of its unrestricted funding from the state in the form of and "Average Daily Attendence" allotment per student enrolled for a particular year. At this time the allotment is around $5,300 per student per year and we have roughly 9,300 students. This allotment goes up with increase and down with decrease. As long as we can find a way to increase and maintain or hold a higher number of enrolment we can get more money from the state that cannot be taken away from us.

Curently, the population of school age children in this district has become stagnate or is ever so slightly decreasing yearly. I believe that the district must now take a page from the private schools and start to recruit more students from outside the district. These students are typically the children of people who work in South San Francisco. I feel that the district and city government should partner up and aggressively promote the child care structure they alreay have in place and approach our business community to show them the value in funding further enhancements and at the same time promote the excellent quality of education our district provides. The district already has a small percentage of its enrollment from this area but it could get much larger. It has the ability to take in at least 300 more students without the need to open another school. It may also be practical to include our private schools in this partnership to be fair and equitable. I don't mind losing 5 or 10 students to private schools if we are getting 50 or more. In this way, everyone shares in the benefits of growth and the cost of managing it.
