Heyward Robinson moved to the Peninsula over 20 years ago to pursue a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. Heyward and his wife, Joanna Mountain, a professor at Stanford University since 1998, have been Menlo Park homeowners since 1999. In 2002 their home won the City of Menlo Park's Environmental Quality Award as well as recognition from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Mateo Chapter for a project that inspires others "to apply green principles to their own projects."

Heyward has worked as a Senior Research Engineer at SRI International in Menlo Park since 1997. His long term research interest is in the materials used for manufacturing solar cells.

Heyward and his wife have two children, ages 5 and 10, who attend Oak Knoll Elementary School. Heyward has coached youth soccer, baseball, and basketball teams, and currently volunteers as a referee for youth soccer. He enjoys a number of recreational activities, especially hiking and biking, available in Menlo Park and surrounding areas. He currently serves Menlo Park as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner.
