George McNeil's Biography

By George McNeil

Candidate for Council Member; City of Oceanside

This information is provided by the candidate
George McNeil was born in Scotland and emigrated with his parents to the United States when he was 16. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Villanova University and taught high school for two years. After becoming a United States citizen George worked for thirty years as a teacher, counselor and administrator in a public school system in suburban Philadelphia. During that time he earned a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling from Villanova and numerous certifications from other universities.

George married his wife Maggie in 1962 and they have six children. So far they have twenty grandchildren. Although all of the children have their own homes, four cats and a dog help to fill the McNeil household at this time.

After George retired he and Maggie moved to San Diego where he worked as a teacher and administrator for five years. Once George retired for the second time they moved to Oceanside and have lived here for over five years.

George has always been active in community affairs and youth sports wherever he lived. In Oceanside he is the Chairman of the Manufactured Home Fair Practices Commission, Treasurer of his Home Owners Association, and was Vice-Chairman of the El Corazon Planning Committee. George regularly attends the City council meetings and can frequently be seen addressing the Council on a wide range of community topics.

George is particularly proud of the work done by the El Corazon Planning Committee which took an issue that had split Oceanside down the middle and after two years of prodigious community outreach and intensive study developed a comprehensive plan that has met with overwhelming approval.

He feels that Oceanside is a wonderful, diverse city in a magnificent part of our great country and is optimistic that while Oceanside grows and changes it will maintain its unique blend of high quality businesses and "down home" friendly neighborhoods.

George thinks that while Oceanside must enhance its attractiveness to the tourism industry it must also never forget that all the residents of this fine city deserve to reap the benefits of that industry.

All aspects of Oceanside - from a new beachfront hotel to a locally owned store on Vista Way, from new homes in Morro Hills to long established residences on Ditmar Street, from old neighborhood pocket parks to the new park on El Corazon, from Oceana to Ocean Hills - must gain from the developmental spurt now taking place. All of the residents as well as all of the commercial enterprises should benefit from the growth of Oceanside.

George has said "it is the duty of a Councilperson to seek input from all available sources, listen carefully to that input, analyze the facts and make the best decisions possible for everyone in Oceanside".
