Art Madrid is a fifty year resident of La Mesa and is currently serving his fourth term as Mayor. Prior to his election as Mayor in 1990, he served on the city council from 1981 until his first Mayoral win. He also served on three key city commissions, the Planning-, Human Relations- and Parks & Recreation Commissions.

Mayor Madrid retired from Pacific Bell in 1991 after a 35-year career. His last assignment, which covered seventeen years, was as Director of Governmental Relations for San Diego and Imperial Counties. In that capacity he coordinated all local governmental activities between PacBell and all governmental jurisdictions, including state elected officials from these two counties.

In addition, Art Madrid had the privilege of serving in Governor Ronald Reagan's administration. The Governor appointed him to two state boards, the California Veterans Board and Human Resources Development Board.

The Mayor's involvement in local and state government also includes serving as an assistant to San Diego Mayor Pete Wilson. Art Madrid was granted a leave of absence by PacBell, and returned after serving as an assistant during Wilson's first term as Mayor.

Prior to holding elected office, Art Madrid was a community advocate for schools, youth recreations, seniors, business and non-profit organizations.

Mayor Madrid has served on over 128 boards and commissions during the past 40 years at the local, regional, state and national levels in a wide range of categories.

Mayor Madrid is also the recipient of numerous personal awards and citations, including Outstanding Elected Official in San Diego County, American Planning Association Distinguished Official, Thurgood Marshal Good Government Award, selected Citizen of the Year by several local organizations, and listed in San Diego magazine as one of the 50 people to watch in the region.
