Youth Programs

By Bill Goulet

Candidate for Council Member; City of National City

My reasons why enhanced youth programs can lead to a safer city
The current mentality in the city is that tough enforcement of the law will ultimately reduce crime. That doesn't seem to be working too well. I would like to see some money spent on prevention. Tough enforcement leads to police brutality and racial profiling. It creates a rift between police and the community. I believe enhancing youth programs to keep them off the streets is a great form of crime prevention. Let's get these kids when they're young and we won't have problems with them later. I would like to see more city employees , especially police , live in the city. Police recruiting procedures have to start at Sweetwater High School. City residents should have priority when it comes to new recruits. Police have to respect our citizens no matter what their race or social standing might be. I am not asking that we reduce patrols but police activity must be monitored and the police oversight commission should have the power to deal with it.
