By Stephen Cochrane

Candidate for Board Member; San Dieguito Union High School District

Greater Communication and Community Participation Through Technology
Pod casting, internet discussion boards, and e-mail are basic technological tools that the board could use to dramatically increase the communication and better establish a collaborative effort with the community to meet the challenges the school district faces.

Communication is both expressive and receptive. Currently, the only way one could communicate with the board is through attendence of a school board meeting, and a 3 minute time limit is imposed on the speakers. Busy working adults with children typically can not make a board meeting. However, by utilizing the aforementioned technological tools, the board would be much better able to receive information from the community, provide information to the community, and include the community in resolving its challenges. Furthermore, communication and transparence go hand in glove. A communicative school board is an open school board. Ultimately, all stakehonders including the students, the broader community, the administration, the classified staff, and the teachers benefit from open communication.
