Council Member; City of Encinitas

This information is provided by the candidate

Thomas L. Brown is a native Californian and 4th generation north county resident. He is the loving father of two successful young men and has been happily married to his lovely wife Sandra, for over 37 years.

Tom became an entrepreneur in 1984 when he started Sierra Pacific West, Inc. (SPW) in Encinitas. Under his leadership, SPW has catapulted to success as one of the top 300 specialty contractors in the nation and has twice been recognized as winner of the prestigious Contractor of the Year Award. Tom loves Encinitas and has used the success of his company to give back to the City on several occasions, including a soil donation to Quail Botanical Gardens valued at over $200,000. Tom was also an integral contributor to the construction of the Bocce Ball Center and a founding father of slow pitch softball in the area.

Tom's commitment to the environment has driven him to amend the ecological stereotypes generally associated with the construction industry. He was a vital player in the Wetlands Creation project which helped secure a future for countless wildlife species while maintaining the natural beauty of our county. Tom has also assisted in the development of many parks, such as Sun Vista Park, and was the original donor of the Lake Drive softball fields. These parks and recreational areas add to the attractiveness of our neighborhoods and provide residents and families with a safe place to play and relax.

As a father and former youth softball coach, Tom knows the importance of our youth and has sought to construct programs aimed at giving children safe alternatives to the negative social pressures they are continually facing. Toping this list is his commitment to education and the efforts he has made toward building safe and affordable schools.

Tom has used his company, Sierra Pacific West, Inc., to consistently deliver the lowest bids possible to the City of Encinitas for the creation of public schools, saving the city countless amounts on construction costs. Tom's company has participated in the construction of over 100 schools throughout Southern California, five of which have directly assisted the Encinitas area in keeping pace with the demands of an ever-increasing student population. Among them are Oak Crest, La Costa Canyon, Canyon Crest, Torrey Pines High School, and San Dieguito Academy. SPW also built the "Safe Route to Schools" which widened the pedestrian right of way in many areas and provided students with a safe alternative to walking in busy streets.

Today Tom is more passionate then ever at preserving the safety of our families. He is an Honorary Deputy Sheriff and the Chairman of the San Diego Family Justice Center Foundation which is committed to helping abused and battered women and children. These are among the many efforts which have earned him the official endorsement of the Republican Party. Tom is a natural leader and has always sought the betterment of any organization he is associated with. His leadership experiences also include being a State of California former appointee to the Contractors State License Board, President of the Associated General Contractors of America, San Diego Chapter, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Associated General Contractors Apprenticeship and Training Trust.
