Candidate for
Board Member; Scotts Valley Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I am seeking re-election as a Trustee for the Scotts Valley Unified School District. During my four years on the board, I have been committed to improving the overall performance of our District and have worked closely with our District and our community to bring trust and stability to our schools.

Prior to my election in 2002, I served as PTA President for Brook Knoll Elementary, Chair of the Legislative Action Committee, a member of the Measure B Executive Committee for a Middle School Bond and an active parent in the classroom and at our school sites.

During my four years, I've accomplished a number of things I am very proud of, including: Been an active board member at school and community events; Been an available contact for parents, city leaders and community; Worked with the current Board to hire a new, permanent superintendent and SVHS Principal and Vice-Principal; Directed the District in the development of its first strategic plan for efficiently and effectively providing excellent educational opportunities for all students; Headed the District's Legislative Action Committee and actively advocated with local and state legislators on issues affecting our schools; Created and led a Student Legislative Action Committee. We advocated for healthier lunches at the elementary schools, resulting in our Food Services Department taking over the lunch program at both Brook Knoll and Vine Hill and we traveled to Sacramento to meet with legislators; Represented Santa Cruz County as an elected Delegate for the California School Board Association and assisted other Districts in Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties to advocate alongside us on important issues; Worked with our High School Journalism class and assisted them in making contact with District personnel and other community leaders to ensure accuracy and objectivity in their reporting. As a product of Scotts Valley Unified School District, parent of two in Scotts Valley schools, and a 33-year resident of the city, I am dedicated to ensuring our schools continue to provide quality educational opportunities to all of our children. If I am re-elected I will continue to focus on:

The implementation of our strategic plan; Continued improvement of fiscal efficiencies; A strategic and well-thought out plan for a new Middle School to replace the aging structure; Continued emphasis on improving student achievement; Availability to all parents and community members. At the same time, my active participation in a wide range of school activities and availability to parents and community as an active listener and leader will not waver.
