The Record

MAYOR MANAYAN'S LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1996-2002

Brought Light Rail to Milpitas and built an elevated train track that substantially lessened the traffic impact to the city.

Facilitated the sale and redevelopment of the Great Mall which led to increased tax revenues and substantial employment opportunities, especially for our youth.

Expedited the construction of a new corporate business park for Cisco Systems which led to increased revenues and substantial employment opportunities for our citizens.

Helped to make Milpitas one of the safest cities in California through increased community policing, D.A.R.E and prevention programs in the schools, and strong support for police. During his 6 years as Mayor, crime decreased each consecutive year.

Built consensus among the City Council through focusing upon issues facing the city and minimizing conflicts.

Actively campaigned for the successful passing of the first school bond, raised millions for our public schools, enabling the building of many new facilities and improvements.

Improved traffic flow through transportation improvements; rebuilding intersections at Highways 237/880 and Dixon Landing/880, aligned Piedmont/Evans roads and completed the Great Mall Parkway.

Increased housing that an average wage earner can afford through development of the Monte Vista Apartments and three new subdivisions near the Great Mall.

Preserved Open Space by keeping the Hillsides free from development.

Achieved economic stimulus through the completion of Milpitas Square Center, the largest Asian Shopping Mall in Northern California.

Established the first Milpitas Charity Ball raising thousands of dollars for the Senior Center, Milpitas Schools, the YMCA, Bright Beginnings, Woman and Their Children, Northside Community Center, the Milpitas Chamber of Commerce, and The Reading Program.

Initiated the design and construction of the City's first dog park.

Commenced the design & development of the City's Main Library.

Pushed for initiatives to stimulate the economy which brought in many new high-tech company's and businesses including Sony, Cisco Systems, Seagate, Veritas Software, Macronix, One Workplace, Palm, KLA Tencor, and Maxtor.

Initiated a strong Arts program within the City that placed public art at Light Rail stations and throughout the City parks, and established an Arts Commission to enhance public arts.

Completed the construction of many new facilities including the Sports Center, the Teen, Center and a new Fire Station, in addition to the renovation of several city parks & trails
