Expanding Opportunities for NUSD's GATE Program

By Willie Armstrong

Candidate for Board Member; Natomas Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Closing the achievement gap is essential so that no child is left behind. However, all too often we forget about additional resources for our students that are showing strong academic success.

Currently, at NUSD's high school level, classes are designated as advanced, honors or Advanced Placement (AP) for eligible students. The Advanced Placement classes prepare students to take university level exams which, if passed, may allow students to receive university credit and/or waive certain course work.

I would like to expand NUSD's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program by incorporating additional AP courses, resume writing, interviewing skills and encouraging Board members to write letters of recommendation and make phone calls to receiving colleges and universities.
