Addressing Top Concerns for the College of the Desert

By John "Jack" Holton

Candidate for Trustee; Desert Community College District; Trustee Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
The following paragaphs outline some top issues facing the College of the Desert Board of Trustees and my approach to adressing these issues.
1. Selecting a New Superintendent/President - My objective is to select a new superintendent who will effectively enhance our reputation as a leading two year college; recognized locally, regionally and statewide for its:
  • Institutional Effectiveness,
  • Technical Advancement,
  • Student Support,
  • Model Academic and Professional Programs, and
  • Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

2. Control of Measure B Planning and Spending - Wise spending of the 346 million dollars for improving and expanding the district's education centers is imperative. I have consulted for the Southern California Edison Company in the planning and construction of their nuclear and conventional power generating facilities. I have also supervised the design and construction of the technological infrastructure of Union Bank's main information processing facilities. I will use my extensive academic and business experience to ensure that Measure B funds are used wisely.

3. Expanding Basic Skills Education Program - The teaching and support resources allocated to Basic Skills Education are insufficient. Typically, college budgets can be streamlined and monetary resources found to address important needs. One of my first objectives will be to find and allocate the monetary resources needed to improve and expand this program.
