He attended Fern Drive Elementry School, Parks Junior High School, and Sunny Hills High School. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 1232 which met at Parks Junior High. He played football at Sunny Hills High School until an accident took away that privilege when he was just a sophomore.

At age sixteen, he started working towards getting his real estate license. He always knew that this was his chosen profession. His neighbor, Mary Mayer, was instrumental in showing his the ropes. Upon graduation from high school, he worked at Hunt-Wesson (now Con-Agra Foods) for the summer, while studying for the real estate exam. He passed the exam on the first time and sold his first home that same month (November 1988). In 1993, he added lending to his skills.

He was a coach of girls' softball for Fullerton Hills for a couple of years. After being a referee for girls' volleyball for a few years, he started coaching the sport, alongside Ron Kasser, at Sunny Hills High School.

Currently, Leland works and resides in Fullerton, as does much of his family. Some family members relocated to Fullerton from nearby cities in order to live in a better place with better schools. His mother is a small business owner in Fullerton, and his sister works at a child development center.

Leland is active in the community. Besides serving as a member of City Council, Leland is very active in the community in many other ways. He has served on the Community Services Commission, the Block Grant Committee, and the Board of Directors of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Planning Commission and the Board of Managers of the North Orange County YMCA.

Through Leland's work and volunteering, and serving as your City Councilman, he hopes to help preserve Fullerton as that better place to live.
