Candidate Statement

By Jan Wagner

Candidate for Board Member; Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Much has been accomplished during my eight years on the School Board, and I am proud of that record. Together we are moving PYLUSD from good to great.
I am School Board Vice President, Executive Director of a non-profit corporation, parent and 26-year resident of PYLUSD. Since my election, our board reduced class sizes, improved teacher training, built new schools and modernized existing ones. Every elementary school emphasizes basic skills. New technology curriculum, International Baccalaureate program, AP and career/technical classes challenge students. Schools support parents by emphasizing honesty, self-reliance, and responsibility. Test results show steady improvement.

Taxpayers hold School Board members accountable for sound fiscal judgment, safe, orderly, well-maintained schools, and classrooms equipped with modern technology for teaching and learning. Students must master reading, writing, and math skills, then build on those fundamentals with the challenging coursework needed to succeed in college and career.

Through community bond support, state matching funds and successful litigation, we have built two new elementary schools and completely modernized 22 existing schools. The new Yorba Linda High School and Valadez Middle School will open in fall 2008. Independent auditors noted that PYLUSD management of these important and complex projects, involving $400,000,000, serves as a model for Southern California.

I am proud of our progress, and request your vote to continue this important work for our children.
