Revenue Enhancement

By Alan Cohen

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Pacific Grove; Full Term

This information is provided by the candidate
Revenue Enhancement is the most daunting issue facing the City Council in 2007-08
Transient Occupancy Taxes: These are the taxes we receive from hotel/motel owners as they collect it from guests. Some suggest we increase these taxes. I believe we can improve revenue by attracting visitors during the slow months and mid week. Working with the inn keepers we can enhance revenue.

Promote City Assets: We have one of the prize golf courses on the peninsula that is affordable to all. We now have a new club house facility that can offer a site for events. We have not done a good job in marketing this facility. As we promote this asset we need to be constantly aware that it is located in a residential setting.

Sales Tax: This could be a substantial source of revenue. I could support this effort but only if it contained a sunset clause to be reviewed at a later date.

Business Opportunities: We recently saw our only theatre close. The historic "Bathhouse" sits empty denying the city a good source of revenue. The Business Improvement District needs to complete a through survey of all business and give recommendations to the Council on how to improve our business climate. There has to be a better partnering between city government and the business community.

The residents of Pacific Grove are a caring and giving community. I believe we are all willing to participate in city activities in order to further improve our quality of life and environment.
