Nancy Greenstein has a lifelong commitment to education.

In 2002, Nancy successfully ran for the Community College Board of Trustees. Over the past four years and, most recently, as the current Chair, she has provided successful leadership on state and local levels, advocating for a responsible state funding formula, building relationships with local cities and community organizations, and insuring the continuance of high-quality education and workforce development programs. Under her watch the new Emeritus College program building opened in downtown Santa Monica, the first certified "Green" building came on line (with many more in progress) and new learning centers were opened for nursing and early childhood education.

She is a tireless advocate for workforce development (vocational) programs and believes that the high quality of all programs, including the unmatched level of instruction allowing SMC to have the highest rate of transfer to the UC system, is due to the excellent faculty, staff and administration. She is immensely satisfied that the process to hire the new president, Dr. Chui Tsang, was inclusive allowing all members of the college and local communities to be represented in the selection process. Dr. Tsang begun his tenure in February 2006 and, as chair, Nancy has taken the leadership in the transition process.

There was life before being elected to the College Board. After receiving her Bachelors Degree in Education from Boston University, she taught in a two-room school on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. She relocated to Southern California where she received her MSW from UCLA, and continued her work with Native American children and families. Later, Nancy served as a social worker with several Jewish community service agencies.

She worked for the City of West Hollywood where she served as the Public Safety Administrator. She has been recognized by the LA County Sheriff's Department, City of West Hollywood and International Chief's of Police Association for her work with community policing. Her success with community policing programs in West Hollywood led to her current position as a public safety director for the UCLA police department. While working at UCLA she returned to the classroom and received her Doctorate in Education. In spring 2006, she was recognized with the prestigious leadership award from the Educational Leadership Program at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences.

In additional to her professional activities, she has been appointed or elected to positions of leadership on dozens of boards and commissions locally and regionally. Some of her Santa Monica area activities include: (partial list past and present)
