Unified Neighborhood Schools

By Ken Mettler

Candidate for Board Member; Kern High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Bigger is not better! KHSD is the largest high school district (9-12) in the state.
We need to align the feeder elementary school boundaries with the receiving KHSD boundaries to create "Unified Neighborhood Schools". Quality neighborhood schools will enhance accountability, parental involvement, and foster healthy competition.

We need the following:

  • Alignment of the curriculum between the elementary districts and the KHSD.
  • Stop social promotion from 8th grade to high school. An 8th grade exit exam is needed to ensure students are truly ready for high school level work and enforce accountability on the elementary districts.
  • Academic academy in 9th grade for "at risk" kids
  • Incentives for the students should be provided for good test results, to ensure test accuracy.
  • Parental choice and innovation with a charter high school
  • Smaller neighborhood unified school districts for grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. If reforms are not instituted by the board and the community is receptive.
