COMMINITY LEADERS AGREE, "Shirley Issel for School Board"

"Shirley tells the truth without judgment and with compassion. We need her voice on the Board."
Shirley Richardson Brower, Director South Berkeley YMCA

"Shirley Issel has served our community with energy, sensitivity and integrity. She is a no-nonsense woman who uses her ideas and Social Work skills to reach out, bring people together to find solutions that work!"
Betty Olds, City Councilmember

"I admire her ability to be a calming, steady, friendly and productive presence in her work for our community."
Mark Coplan, President, In Dulci Jubilo Foundation

"For me, there is nothing more important than what is in a persons heart and conscience. I've worked with Shirley Issel and I know that she wants the best education for all children. Shirley has the combination of faith, dedication and commitment that I am looking for."
Dr. Salvador Murillo, Board of Managers, YMCA

"Shirley is part of a board that bridges political differences in order to remain focused on kids and restore the district to fiscal health."
Sheila Jordan, Alameda County Superintendent of Schools

"Shirley impressed me because she spent the time to learn about our schools and had the energy and insight to compel the district to address critical problems. We need her on the Board!"
Lloyd Lee, Former School Board Director

"Thanks to School Board Director Shirley Issel's vision and leadership, Berkeley students of all ability levels are benefiting from one-on-one writing instruction and boosting their literacy achievement. Using her remarkable ability to identify and tap programs with great potential, Director Issel discovered the Writers' Room Project and then worked with BUSD administration, parent groups and community leaders to bring it to Berkeley's teachers and students. Now a BUSD success story, the program's 160 trained volunteer writing coaches will give 9,600 hours of skilled, individual coach/mentoring to more than 1,200 middle and high school students this 2002-2003 academic year. This contribution of time and expertise, conservatively valued at $480,000, helps bridge the achievement gap, supports teachers and brings community resources to aid our cash strapped district. Our students, teachers and community need more of Director Issel's practical, results oriented leadership."
Dr. Mary Lee Cole, Writers' Room Project Director

E-MAIL CORRESPONDENCE EXCERPTS . . .

"It appears that you again seem to be the lone voice or at least one of the few voices of reason in considering an important matter for BHS."
Berkeley School Teacher

"I can see that you have put an enormous amount of care and energy into your position. That's all anyone can ask of their elected representative. Thank you."

Yours, in disagreement, UC Bekeley Professor

"I always appreciate the way you think about things and express your true beliefs despite what the political fall out might be for the benefit of our children."
Berkeley School Parent

"Kudos for your courage in withstanding such pressure tactics. I am so glad my daughter is out of the Berkeley schools, but I'm so glad you're still there, fighting the good fight. Again, thanks for being the [unpopular] voice of reason."
Berkeley School Parent

"Jumping in as a member of the Special Education Parents Network (BSPED) from it's inception, Shirley has leveraged her Board position to open doors for families--setting up and sustaining a collaborative dialog with our Superintendent. I thank Shirley for demonstrating that civil rights is not for just a few. I thank her for illuminating that every time talent and ambition is recognized and furthered through education, it serves us all."
Berkeley School Parent, Ann McDonald-Cacho

"After yawning through so much verbal dancing around the obvious, it was refreshing to hear you put this whole business in proper perspective."
Berkeley School Parent

"You all came to the local school workshops, when no one from the administration chose to do so, you went over to the school, to reacquaint yourselves with what actually happens there, and you listened so sympathetically and respectfully at the Board workshop, that you gave frightened people the courage to use their 300 words of English to speak up in a public forum. It was the most impressive demonstration of democracy in action we could have invented, and it really mattered!"
Berkeley School Parent

"Kudos to you for graciously and empathetically informing staff that certifying something that has not been completely presented is not acceptable. I am glad that you take your fiduciary responsibility so seriously."
Berkeley School Parent
