The Academic Performance Index (API) is the primary system used to evaluate how well a school teaching its students, and whether or not students have reach a proficient level of learning. The API is a single-number indicator of the performance of a school's students on state tests.

The API system only require subgroups to reach 80% of the improvement of the school's goal. But most people are not aware that an API score of 800, is considered to be somewhere below the level of proficiency. A school must have an API score of approximately 875 before it is consider to be procient.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), can help educators to focus on closing the achievement gap between various subgroups. The AYP can reveal important truths about the performances of subgroups. The information indicate where to apply resources to close the achievement gap, and draws attention to the achievement gap between subgroups that fly beneath API's accountability.

I believe the AYP score of a school or district can be improved if the achievement gap between the subgroups is lowered. The district should accelerate its efforts to create academic counseling programs, so that the students that are farthest away from meeting standards can be provided assistance.

One of my goals as a school Board Member will be to become a Math Academic Counselor for subgroups who are not meeting standards
