Taking a Stand for Improved Transportation and Public Safety
IMPROVED TRANSPORTATION

As Mayor of Calabasas, I reduced traffic congestion in my city, and I have a plan--a "Tool Box" of common sense solutions--to clear logjams, open our clogged automotive arteries and Get Southern California Moving Again. As your new Assemblymember, I will:

Computerize All Signals at Major Roadways and On/Off Ramps

I will insist that our district receive its fair share of transportation funding, and that we once and for all synchronize signals throughout the area to reduce congestion. I will use my proven skills at problem solving, and my strong relationships with local officials to seek regional solutions to our traffic problems.

Stop Rush Hour Construction Projects

Nothing is more maddening than rush hour congestion caused by construction projects that could have been scheduled at night, or in off-peak hours. That's why I will support a ban on rush hour road construction on designated state roads and freeways. It just makes sense.

Remove Freeway Accidents In Six Minutes

I will sponsor legislation for California to adopt Houston's successful traffic mobility program, which includes clearing non-injury collisions, fender benders and flat tires within six minutes, thus reducing backup that leads to gridlock and additional accidents.

Stop Rubbernecking at Freeway Accidents

I will reduce the traffic caused by drivers slowing down to view an accident by following Massachusetts' program to erect seven-foot-tall by ten-foot-wide portable lightweight screens to obscure accidents from passersby and keep drivers moving.

Appoint a Road Superintendent

It worked in Calabasas, and it can work throughout our district. As our new Assemblymember, I will support appointing a Road Superintendent to oversee management of traffic safety and emergency response on critical roads throughout the district. People deserve to spend more time with their families, volunteering at schools and running their businesses--not sitting in traffic.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Now more than ever, it is incumbent upon public officials to be prepared. As Mayor, I worked closely with the unified command center of 3,000 fire fighters and law enforcement officers to coordinate the city's response to the worst wildfire emergency in our history. As your new Assemblymember, I will use my years of experience and proven abilities in this area to dedicate myself to ensure that our region is ready for any type of natural or terrorist-related disaster.

Fight for Our Fair Share of Homeland Security Funding

Our first responders must have all the resources they need to protect us from natural and man-made disasters. As your new Assemblymember, I will fight for our region's fair share of Homeland Security funds to ensure that our local law enforcement departments are adequately staffed, that our communication systems are up-to-date and coordinated, and that they have access to the latest and best crime fighting technology.

Coordinate & Collaborate with Our Public and Safety Professionals

Using my experience as Mayor and former prosecutor, I will work with public safety personnel to coordinate the lead response on all accidents including hazardous material spills, terrorism, and natural disasters. This will include identifying emergency preparedness weaknesses, protecting drinking water supplies, assuring children are safe in schools, and a clear understanding of which agency is in charge during an emergency.
