Government functions in the public interest best when the public has the greatest access to the information upon which policy decisions are made.
Government functions in the public interest best when the public has the greatest access to the information upon which policy decisions are made. The corrupting influence of big-money special interests diminishes when campaign contributions and expenditures are limited and fully reported. I believe in open, ethical government and Sunshine laws that empower San Francisco residents to participate equally and powerfully in holding City government accountable for its actions.

I am deeply committed to open, ethical government. I currently am participating in the City's voluntary public financing program. I also am committed to abide by the City's voluntary spending limits, and have challenged the other candidates in the race to do the same. True grassroots democracy occurs when candidates spend time talking with voters, rather than raising funds.

I strongly support the City's sunshine ordinance and believe that it should be strengthened. The Sunshine Ordinance is intended to make government decision-making processes open and accessible to everyday people in San Francisco. It enables San Franciscans to cast more informed votes. It reduces the possibility of corruption by prohibiting secret deals. We have come a long way in holding city agencies accountable to Sunshine laws, but we can do better. I will work to strengthen and expand our Sunshine laws and ensure that they are effective.
