Thank you for your interest in my candidacy. In 1952 my mother and father allowed me to join them in watching the Democratic National Convention on my grandparents' television. Sitting in front of their small black and white set and listening to family discussions, I learned that politics is an exhilarating and important endeavor. I also determined that I would make politics a part of my life, and, for the past 45 years, I have been successful in doing so.
Born and raised in El Cajon, I attended Meridian Elementary, Greenfield Junior High, and Granite Hills High Schools. I have a BA from the University of California, Riverside, and a JD from the University of San Diego. For 20 years I worked in Sacramento as an attorney for the Legislature and as a lobbyist.
A lifelong Democratic activist, I have been involved in many national, statewide, and local campaigns, beginning in 1964 with the effort to protect the Rumford Fair Housing Act. Currently I am a member of the East County Democratic Club and the San Diego Democratic Club, on whose board I sat for three years. I have been a member of the Central Committee for four years and served as director of fundraising for two. In 2004, I was elected to represent the 52nd Congressional District as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, supporting Senator Kerry. At the state convention in 2005, I received the regional director's award for outstanding service to the party, and this year, I was the recipient of a San Diego County Democratic Party (SDCDP) chair's award for my volunteerism. I continue to organize and cook for fundraisers for the SDCDP, the most recent being an Oscar night party. Currently I am arranging a meet-and-greet for Lt. governor candidate Jackie Speier and volunteering for John Chiang, candidate for controller, and Derek Casady, an old East County and Sacramento friend. If re-elected to the central committee, I will continue to support Chair Jess Durfee's efforts to expand the influence and increase the professionalism of the SDCDP and to work on my fundraising activities. I would greatly appreciate your vote. Marilyn Riley |
