Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Miriam G. (Genser) Raftery

Candidate for
Member, Democratic Party County Central Committee; County of San Diego; Assembly District 77

This information is provided by the candidate

I am a proud liberal who supports the progressive tradition established by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy.

I oppose the Bush doctrine of pre-emptive war and believe the President and Vice President should be impeached for starting a war based on lies, authorizing torture in violation of the Geneva Convention, and illegally seizing telephone and Internet records of millions of innocent Americans. We must protect our Constitutional rights and restore respect for International law.

I support the Democratic platform including respect for civil rights, equality, women's reproductive freedom, and the rights of working men and women. I believe in a strong public education including affordable college education, investment in alternative and renewable energy sources, universal healthcare for all Americans, and fair taxation that does NOT burden the poor and middle class while giving huge tax giveaways to the wealthy and corporations.

To reduce corruption, restore ethics in government and reduce the influence of special interests, I support reforms including clean elections and public financing of campaigns for higher offices. I oppose the use of unverifiable, paperless voting machines and will fight for the public's right to clean, fair elections that ensure every vote is counted.
