Martin and his wife Amy have been San Diego residents since 1976. Martin was an original "Mr. Mom", taking care of their daughter, Rebecca. Rebecca, born with a serious visual impairment, is now a high school senior graduating with honors.

As the parent of a student with a disability, Martin has participated in the IEP process for 18 years.

Martin has been working as a substitute teacher in San Diego and La Mesa for over eight years.

Martin was a classroom volunteer, a Rolling Reader, library helper, PTA member and former PTA Legislative Representative. Martin was a member of the Benchley-Weinberger SSC Team participating in shared-decision making through consensus.

Martin was a community representative to the Patrick Henry High Reconfiguration Meetings and the Lewis Middle School Reorganization Team.
