Bill Hunt, Police Chief of San Clemente - 25 Years in Law Enforcement

Professional Experience and Qualifications

Bill has extensive experience at every level in the Sheriff's Department having worked and proven himself a leader as a Deputy Sheriff, an Investigator, Supervisor and Manager.

Operations Experience

Bill has over eight years experience working in operations. He currently serves as the Chief of Police Services for the City of San Clemente. In this assignment Bill manages the day to day operation for the Sheriff's Department serving the more than 63,000 residents of this growing city. He manages a 9.3 million dollar budget that includes patrol, investigations, traffic enforcement, parking enforcement, records, and crime prevention. Bill has extensive patrol experience himself and was awarded Deputy of the year for the City of San Juan Capistrano in 1992.

Investigative Experience

Bill has over 6 years of investigative experience having worked in general investigations assigned to the City of Mission Viejo. He was a member of the South County Directed Enforcement Team; Narcotics Enforcement in Stanton, North County and South Orange County; and a Supervisor for the Gang Enforcement Team with responsibility for all of South Orange County Gang Activity.

Training Experience

Bill has served two tours at the Sheriff's Basic Academy one as a Deputy Sheriff and one as a Sergeant. He has trained police recruits from agencies all over Southern California, imparting the values, ethics and experience he has gained in his career, to the police officers of the future. Bill has also served as an instructor at the Sheriff's Basic Academy teaching patrol tactics.

SWAT Experience

Bill has 14 years of experience with the Orange County Sheriff's Department SWAT team, the largest and most versatile SWAT team in Orange County. Bill has been instrumental in its development over the last 20 years and has participated in numerous high risk operations during that time. He served more than five years as a Supervisor on the team enhancing training, team member fitness and proficiency.

Jail Experience

Bill has over 7 ½ years of experience in corrections. He has worked in the Men's Main Jail, the Intake Release Center and the Theo Lacy facility. He served in the capacity as a Deputy Sheriff, a Sergeant and a Lieutenant.

Military Police Experience

Bill served in the United States Army Military Police Corps from September 12, 1980 + September 12, 1983. Bill was assigned to the 218th MP Company in Augsburg, Germany. He served his last year of active duty at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, where he was a member of the Emergency Response Team.

Master of Arts: Negotiation and Conflict Management, California State University Dominguez Hills - 1997.

Bachelor of Science: Business and Management, University of Redlands + 1995. Associate in Arts: Spanish, Saddleback College + 1992. Associate in Arts: Criminal Justice, Saddleback College + 1987.

Los Angeles Police Department - West Point Leadership and Command Program Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training + Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training - Management Course
