ANOMIE. ARE WE THERE YET?

By Teddi Alves

Candidate for Democratic Party Central Committee; County of Orange; State Assembly District 67

This information is provided by the candidate
"Putting oneself in the place of the Other;" "The Golden Rule"
  • Emile Durkheim, the father of Sociology, introduced the concept of Anomie as that when people become alienated and disassociated from one another, disenfranchised.

Have we arrived? When "all politics are local," major publications have deemed such coverage frivolous. Neighbors primarily see each other departing and returning from career days, busy on the weekends; sound bytes of network media have replaced in depth exposure of issues critical to our national well being.

  • "The Golden Rule" is a premise of Social Psychology, "putting oneself in the place of the other." The "Immigration issues?" Choice?

Descartes was a philosopher who posited the analogy of God to a clock maker and the ability to create the precision timepiece that to adjust and repair as required. Thus the "creationist" Vs "evolutionary" concepts are actually compatible. The mind of man as differentiated from that of animals has the capability to continually update, process, integrate and apply new information for appropriate response according to conscientious determinations.

Thus difficult issues that are those burdens on individuals forced to deal accordingly with "quality of life." Would anyone argue that medical research is in conflict with "the will of God?" Increasingly we are aware of issues of "the environment" as impacting our health and onset of illness, disease, disorders. Early jubilation at the development and production of the "Ford" motor car has become "learned enlightenment" to those impacts on air quality. And when dinosaurs ruled the earth?

In sum, human kindness, compassion, empathy, and understanding are inherent expectations of a just society.
