Dan Lowenthal earned a B.A. in psychology in 1989 from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a J.D. in 1993 from the Cornell University Law School. After a brief stint in the private sector, Dan joined the Los Angeles City Attorney's office as a criminal prosecutor. There, Dan met and fell in love with the administrative coordinator of the Office's Domestic Violence Unit, Suja Lowenthal (formerly Suja Joseph), and they were married in 1996.

In 1997 Dan moved from the Criminal Branch of the City Attorney's office to the Civil Branch to work in the field of employee relations, primarily representing the City in invidious discrimination cases. Dan became the Manager of the Employment Litigation group and strove to reduce the number of lawsuits filed against the City by tasking his staff of attorneys to proactively train City management to eliminate bias from the workplace.

Recently, Dan relinquished his managerial role in the Civil Branch of the City Attorney's Office and rejoined the Criminal Branch.

Dan has been intricately involved in countywide community, political and volunteer activities over the past decade. He cites his two terms of service as a Commissioner on the Long Beach Citizens Police Complaint Commission and his longtime involvement in the former L.A. Municipal Court's First Impressions Project as among his most rewarding volunteer work.

Dan and his wife, Dr. Suja Lowenthal, live in Long Beach with their 3 ½ year old son, Avi.
